As part of students community engagement, Ms. Fareeha Usman prepared a group of 9 students for a Mural at Ghaliya Museum of Modern art .The Mural was a one day project to provide students an Opportunity to work outdoors and to be engaged in Public art. The Experience gave students motivation and encouragement to try Contemporary style of work.Students visited the old house, where they were showed and told about the antiques and different styles of old Omani rooms.Students visited the art gallery and were explained the different contemporary styles of paintings done by different artists.
Arch & Interior Design Students went to Dubai on a visit that to attend (Design Days Dubai 2016) the first and only fair dedicated to collectible design in the Middle East and South Asia, presenting limited edition contemporary design pieces from the world's established and emerging galleries and design talent.The importance of this visit can be summarized as: The fair presents design from leading international designers and galleries alongside up and coming design from across the world.A mission to communicate the importance of contemporary design & Arts for introducing and supporting new and up-and-coming local talent and its designers and indeed the gallery itself favor local materials and crafts to produce their design objects
The students of Design Studio IV architecture have visited student’s work exhibition at SQU (ZAWAYA) on 18th March, 2016 under the supervision of Ms. Ayah Abbasi, Interior Design Department instructor. This visit was very useful as it helped in having some ideas in the design process and some different point of views. The exhibition illustrated the differences between architects and civil engineer and highlighted the different stages of the design process and the role of each building-specialist in this process.
The integration of practice of realism in the Omani labor market and the theoretical study is one of the Arch. & Interior Design Dept.’s policies. Accordingly, the students of Design Tech. II supervised by Dr. Soheir Hegazy visited the workshop of the wood working company Douglas OHI in Al Ghala industrial area on 27th March, 2016. It is one of the first companies operating in the Sultanate in the field of timber processing since more than thirty years ago and is a branch of the parent company in Britain.
In the framework of studying materials in Design Technology II course, students learn about the details of wood working as one of the skills gained in the section of furniture design. During the visit Eng. Richard De veille, Tendering & Engineering Manager Assistant explained to the student’s different stages of timber processing and manufacturing different types of natural wood. They also knew more about employing computers in manufacturing interior decoration elements, in addition to the implementation of the details’ drawings. The students also recognized several pieces of furniture and wood works. Stages of final paint of timber were the last in the site visit. In addition, Eng Richard promised to prepare a C.D of wood details to be included in the course.
The English Club, organized “ UNITY IN DIVERSITY” on March 30,2016 in the glass gallery. This event provided the General Foundation Students with an opportunity to enhance their English speaking skills. Students conducted a research on 6 different countries; Oman, Palestine, Tanzania, India, Egypt and Japan. They talked in details about these countries: geographical location, language, historical importance, food, dress, language etc. in English. Deputy Dean, Eng. Imad Adel, English instructors, faculty from other departments, GFP students and GFP alumni visited the pavilion and encouraged the participants by asking questions. It was a day full of fun and entertainment.
SCD students went on a field trip organised by SCD Photo Department to a photography exhibition showcasing the works of Mr. Mohamed Mostafa the personal photographer of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. The exhibition shows photos of the Sultan from the early 70s up till recent times. The photos vary from photojournalistic style documenting the the Sultan’s visits and meetings with different heads of states, to portraits of His Majesty in the royal palace, as well as meetings with the Omani people in villages.The students got to meet with Mr. Mostafa and have a long talk and telling the story of how he met His Majesty the first time. Also, Mr. Mostafa explained to the students the aesthetics of his work in some of the photos.
As part of the SCD Artist Talk series, a talk by Sandra Issa was conducted on Tuesday, 12 April, 2016 at Lecture Hall 1. Sandra is currently a resident artist at Sarah Gallery, Muscat.After the talk, guest artist Sandra Issa conducted a workshop for SCD Students using recycled material. Both the talk and the workshop were attended by over 50 students each.The workshop is organised by Mr.Osama Dawod, in collaboration with Dr. Reem Elswaifi, Ms. Fareeha Usman and Mr. Ibrahim Badran.
A faculty exhibition, curated by Ms. Fareeha Usman for the department of Fine Arts was inaugurated by H.E Al-Sheikh Mohanna Bin Saif Alma’ Awali (Bousher Wali) on the 3rd of April, 2016.Dr. Mona Ismail and Eng. Imad Adel were present to welcome the guests along with the faculty of Fine arts and guest artist from Nizwa University.Along with all Fine Arts faculty Dr. Hani Farouk Ibrahim (Nizwa University) and Dr. Bader Al Mamari (Sultan Qaboos University) exhibited their art work in the SCD exhibition area which was displayed for a day
Mr. C. Jawahar and Mr. Ayman Humaira, Fine Arts Department faculty conducted a workshop on usage of clay in making different shapes at Ceramic Studio I, SCD on 22nd February, 2016 for Qurm Private School Students under the guidance of their Art teachers.The Topics of the workshop were shapes in clay and Animal form in clay.The workshop conducted was informative to students with keen insight on usage of clay in developing different shapes.
